Barbie

Barbie takes the well established tropes of a Toy Story and Lego Movie (hi Will Ferrell!) and fucking runs with them. The amount of bite and edge this film manages to pack while necessarily being constrained by marketing departments and IP holders is significant. It feeling as earnest as it does is magnificent. Everyone in this is on the same page and it is just so plain fun, I can't fully grasp why I was on the verge of tears whenever an old lady would show up. Is it full of theory you have never heard? Is it not. Can it spout the anticapitalist rhetoric fully? It can't. Do two of the characters become weirdly tacked on? Perhaps. It didn't matter in the end, though. It is funny, the music and choreographies are absolute highlights, Margot and Ryan absolutely peaked and I feel like even though it is plainly made for people 15 up, you could and should take your 7 year old daughter to see this.
