Incendies
This film put me on my ass. Twice. I was told there was a huge plot twist but I wasn’t told that there was two. I love Denis Villeneuve and I have to say this is in my top 3 from him. I still think Dune 2 and Prisoners are better but this is definitely close. I think the cinematography is fantastic. The use of the Radiohead music is personally something I absolutely loved. I played You and Whose Army probably on repeat for a week after watching this. The use in the first scene is awesome. You can see the hate in their eyes and some with fear. I also think this really puts the issues in the Middle East into perspective during that time period. Lots of people did horrible things in the name of God because nobody raised them to think that there was anything in their life for them other than violence. I love the way they told this story. The daughter backtracks as the mother goes forward in her life. The pool scene from two different viewing perspectives (before and after the twist) is a phenomenal directorial choice. I think putting the first twist in there by simply having the nurse refer to the baby as the first one was awesome. I think the film ends on a great note as well. The letters are heartfelt and shows an incredible amount of forgiveness that takes a lot of strength to have. Wild wild plot twist when the son is with the warlord but the 1+1 lines were so well placed. It’s really hard not to hold this film in such high esteem and taking such a crazy play and making it a film like this is truly why Denis is one of the best directors of this generation and all time.
