Silence
I’ve never seen something so undermentioned in history so beautifully encapsulated in a film in my life. The persecution of Christian’s in the east has been happening for centuries. A prime example of this is in 17th century Japan and specifically Nagasaki and the surrounding smaller islands. Historically speaking, events such as the ones portrayed in this film really did happen. But it should be known that this film was based on an award winning novel based on true events. With that being said, what a fantastic adaptation Scorsese makes. I’ve never seen the moral and spiritual battles of these people so eloquently portrayed in my life. Everything about that part of the film was just amazing. For a film that is so long, it is so perfectly paced. I loved Andrew Garfield who puts on an absolute masterclass performance. Adam Driver is also amazing. Literally my only problem with this is how much Liam Neeson was in the marketing for this film and only gets like 25 minutes of actual screen time. Other than that, this was a perfect film. Character development has never been better portrayed in anything I have ever seen. Grief, loss, suffering, betrayal, guilt, hopelessness and even hopefulness are immovable pillars of this film. I think the evangelical aspect of Christianity and what it should be like was amazingly shown in this film and it really made me feel so connected to the characters discovering their faith. And the ending and how perfect it was really gives you that hope. An astonishingly great film and I applaud Scorsese for how well he did it. Bravo.
