Sunset Boulevard
Going into this, I thought this going to be similar to Citizen Kane in the way that it was a classic but it didn’t really hold up as well over time. I was dead wrong. I was blown away by how great this plot was. For it’s time, this plot and character development is way ahead of its time. The narration was perfectly used. It was paced beautifully throughout. The intricacy of the characters and the unpredictable nature of Joe’s next actions are so well used. The cinematography is good at times but not always super captivating which is the only flaw in this film to me. I was also impressed with the scriptwriting and dialogue throughout the film. It shows a perfect depiction of greed and lust and and even a good early depiction of bipolar disorder. I kept on comparing it to the late 2022 release of Babylon which seems to take some of its themes from this film. A woman fighting to become relevant again like in her younger days and a man who is just trying to make a living doing what he loves. I don’t see a whole lot wrong with this film and I understand why it is considered one of the greatest of all time now.
