Happy Together
I could probably start this by saying 100 different things of why I loved this movie. About why this was one of my fav portrayals of love and want. About Wong’s directional style. Leung being top tier. The Argentinian atmosphere. And all the symbolism throughout. But I’ll leave it at that to keep things salient
I won’t deny, it is trying at times going through the arc. But I think that’s the point? It’s not a story based on any glamour, literally the opposite, on pure toxicity. And yet within that it can be so beautiful.
And although in many ways Happy together is very much the antithesis of Past Lives, I couldn’t help being subtly reminded of Song’s film while watching this. Specifically on the exploration of characters thinking what “could be”, and not what is. Also that ending.
I still think that In the Mood for Love is the better movie, but it feels unfair putting this as a 4.5, so we’ll just pretend that In the Mood for Love is a 5.5.
