Beautiful Boy

Katherine and I put down our six month old and decided to sit down and watch a film we’d been putting off for a few years: Beautiful Boy. Beautiful Boy is not a perfect film. It’s not extravagantly shot or visually transcendent (except for a few shots I loved). It doesn’t have the best soundtrack or score choices. But damn, it is heavy. Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet play each side of the prodigal son pretty flawlessly, packing some of the heaviest emotional punches I’ve seen in films lately. I was also a very big fan of the supporting performances here. Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan were great. Kaitlyn Dever is much better here than in Short Term 12. Magnificent movie. Wept at the beautiful boy song mid-movie. Cried at the final 90 seconds. I love my son.
