mid90s
Mid90s is a film handled so meticulously, so cinematically yet with so much tender, care, understand and acceptance - especially towards the period being presented. Some of it is farcical, sure, some of the dialogue is contrived, sure - but the room it creates for all of these characters to live and breath elevates these ‘issues’ and dissolves them into the attentive care to all of the aspects of the film, in front and behind of the camera.
It’s the perfect blend of kitchen sink-slacker-coming of age film and an exemplary, confident and throughly mature debut from Hill. It really is such a shame that he’s ruined his own career for himself but being a dog cunt because Mid90s, like Eighth Grade and Booksmart (which I have rewatched these past few days) should be regarded as one of the last decades best. Yet, it’s not even talked about, which is beyond frustrating because it’s got it all, soundtrack, performances, script and most importantly, what could’ve easily have got lost in a film as this bold and boisterous in its almost pretentious style, it has substance and heart.
Aged like a fine wine this film has.
