Whiplash
whenever i watch movies i am always searching for a film that will grab me by the throat and make me want to gorge myself on every single shot, line, facial expression, etc etc. this did it.
i was heavily involved in the performing arts for a huge chunk of my life so whiplash has been on my watch list for a long time. i can’t believe it’s taken me this long!! i think everyone who has ever been a performer for a meaningful amount of time has had a sort of fletcher in real life. this film reflects the pressure and intensity of performance and striving for a greatness magnified to 100% but honestly, the exaggeration is less than you’d think. not that my experience or skill is anywhere near comparable to andrew’s lol but some ensembles i’ve been in and instructors i’ve had have been really…intense. i lowkey got body shamed by my marching band director over the megaphone in a 300 person practice so
somehow was more stressful than marty supreme. didn’t think that was possible. that’s the main reason why this isn’t a 5 star yet honestly my blood pressure is way too high for this but i have the feeling a second watch will propel this to a perfect score. what can i say besides “absolute cinema”
