Frankenstein
I think it definitely works well, but some of the more significant changes were jarring. I think when I know generally what's going to happen and then it kind of happens but is different, it feels less like worthwhile subversion and more like the writers thought major departures were an innately necessary feature of adaptation. I like how it narrowed its focus more on the themes of fatherhood and (as the kids say) generational trauma. Visually it's more or less spot-on to how I imagined the scenes/characters/settings. The score is quite remarkable and I found it overall enjoyable. My insignificant gripes are as follows: both Victor and William were too old, there is no Henry (though Herr Hollander often acts as a stand-in), the bit where it's revealed Hollander is dying and he wants to be put into the body (though foreshadowed) comes out of nowhere and leads nowhere, the monster reciting Ozymandias is cute but very confusing (does Percy Shelly exist in this world?), Victor "missing" the monster and shooting Elizabeth is laughably absurd and I think more deaths should've been instead caused by the monster to make Victors guilt less direct but more thematically significant. Overall I liked it but less because of its own merit and more because I like the book.
