Bring Her Back
The Philippou brothers are about to distinguish themselves as some of the most compelling voices in modern horror. They are filmmakers first, horror lovers second. I feel completely confident they could work in any genre.
The first act of this film is a legitimately gripping family drama. A story of two siblings processing the death of their father and their starkly different relationships with him. It’s emotionally rich, it develops our characters in a real way. It could stand on its own as a film.
Then we take a dark turn. The horror emerges… but it’s still through the lens of grief. A powerful metaphor for how loss can hollow someone out. What follows is a visceral descent into body horror: it’s deeply uncomfortable but thematically impactful.
The practical effects are top-tier, makeup and gore that are purposeful … and grotesque. Bring Her Back was likely the best horror film I’ve seen since Talk 2 Me.
