Southpaw
I cried through like 90% of this movie. Not delicate, movie-pretty crying either — I’m talking ugly, blotchy, “why did I do this to myself” kind of crying. And then they had the absolute nerve to play Frank Ocean?? Honestly, that should be grounds for a lawsuit. I came here for cinema, not for a full-blown emotional mugging.
Jake Gyllenhaal, though… my god. He was on another level. Every time the camera lingered on him, you could see the grief just sitting there under his skin, like it was eating him alive. The way he tried to keep it together while clearly falling apart — it was brutal. He didn’t just perform pain, he made you feel it with him. Like, thanks Jake, I really needed that extra layer of psychological damage.
This movie doesn’t give you a break. It just drags you through the mud, wrings you out, and then casually drops a Frank Ocean track to finish you off. I swear I could feel my soul trying to climb out of my body during certain scenes. And the worst part? It’s so beautiful you can’t even be mad at it. You just sit there in ruins, thinking, “Yeah, okay, hurt me again.”
I know myself well enough to say I’ll be depressed for at least the next week. Probably longer. This isn’t one of those films you shake off; it lingers, like a bruise on your heart that keeps aching when you poke at it. Which of course I will, because apparently I’m a masochist who replays gut-wrenching moments in my head for fun.
It’s devastating, it’s unfair, and it’s kind of perfect.
