Maybe it’s because I saw this just now on film in a theater, but this is **the** “movies just don’t look like this anymore” movie. Coolest movie ever

This is a masterpiece to the highest degree. I made the mistake of watching this for the first time on an airplane and knew immediately I needed to rewatch on a real screen. Could not have been more correct. It is hard for me to describe the impact the truly unknowable has on me. The idea of entities beyond our comprehension, the concept of an undefinable “other” we must ration with, the mutually assured destruction in the theory of the dark forest. 2001 tackles these ideas in a way unmatched by any other. This feels like a journey from start to finish, an exploration of something we as a species had just begun to consider and an attempt to rationalize it. There’s a level of comfort for me in knowing that no interpretation is incorrect when it comes to what is out there in the infinite, because no one truly knows. In 1970, Kubrick was able to take a stab at what we thought we were on the road towards, and it’s funny to notice what he got wrong (paid telephone booths on international space stations) and what he may have gotten right (intergalactic monolith space gods).  This also is the Jurassic Park for AI, the alarm bells that maybe this isn’t quite the best idea. I’m terrified not just of HAL and what he is capable of, but that we can now create consciousness just as easily as we can take it away. “My mind is going… I can feel it.” Exceptionally poignant movie in an era where we seem determined to exhaust all means down here before we even consider looking upwards again.

Now I don’t know what kinda pan pacific bullshit power play you’re trying to pull here but Asia, jack, is my territory. So whatever you’re thinking you better think again otherwise I’m gonna have to head down there, and I will rain down an ungodly fucking fire storm upon you. You’re gonna have to call the fucking United Nations and get a fucking binding resolution to keep me from fucking destroying you. I am talking scorched earth mother fucker. I will massacre you! I will fuck you up!
