Hamnet
Com certeza o melhor filme do ano. Melhor filme que eu vi em muito tempo mesmo.
Love & Loss
what is grief, if not love persevering
The Rest Is Silence
Hamnet (2025) is not a film you simply "understand" and then leave behind. It's a film that slowly settles inside you.
What Chloé Zhao does is strip Shakespeare of his mythic status and return him to something profoundly human: a man shattered by the death of a child. The focus is not on William as a writer however, but on Agnes as a mother. That is why the scene in which Hamnet dies in her arms lands with such force. You feel the absolute failure of love to protect, and that may be the most unbearable part of parenthood: that you can give everything and still be powerless.
Hamnet's death in Agnes' arms binds the loss to her body and memory. Her anger toward William is inevitable: he was absent while she remained with their son's final breath.
William escapes into work; Agnes withdraws into silence.
The film does not judge them, but shows how damaging it is when grief is carried alone. Grief isn't a process with stages or a clear endpoint. Grief is a condition. It lives in small gestures. The way silence lingers longer than is comfortable. The way touch sometimes becomes impossible.
And then there is the ending. It shows Agnes seeming to
"make peace," but this is not correct. Her grief does not vanish. It simply changes shape. When she watches Hamlet and sees their loss reflected in William's art, her grief becomes shared. The audience feels the loss too, making it less lonely. The film suggests that "true peace" is not the disappearance of grief, but learning to live with it. Hamlet is not a replacement for Hamnet, but a way to keep him present.
Ultimately, Hamnet (2025) argues that some losses cannot be resolved, but they can be shared. The film lingers because it is not about Shakespeare writing Hamlet, but about how grief takes shape and finds a way to breathe.
