Such a horrifying and honest movie. I don’t think I can watch this again…

Better writing than Brand New Day BY FAR

What a horrifying movie. Genuinely. I don’t think I’ve ever walked away from a film feeling the way I feel after Come and See. This isn’t just a movie I thought was great. This is a movie that affected me. I feel like I need to sit with it for a while and process what I just watched. Come and See has officially taken the spot of The Thin Red Line in my Top 4 which is in no way a complete Top 4. And that’s saying something, because I gave The Thin Red Line a 5/5. I gave both films a 5/5, but honestly, they aren’t even close for me. Come and See is on another level. This is the best war movie I have ever seen. But calling it a war movie almost feels too simple. This is a horror film. One of the most horrifying films I’ve ever watched, and what’s so disturbing is that none of the horror feels exaggerated. There is no romanticizing war. No sense of glory. No attempt to make violence exciting. It just shows you what happens when human beings are put into a world where cruelty becomes ordinary. And I genuinely think this is a movie everyone should see at least once. If someone is pro-war, show them this movie. I’m serious. Show them this before they ever talk about war as if it’s something noble or beautiful. I don’t know how anyone could watch this and come out with the same romanticized view of war they had going in. This movie doesn’t give you a comfortable distance from the suffering. It forces you to sit with it. It forces you to watch innocence disappear. And that is what destroyed me the most. Watching this little boy slowly transform as he experiences more and more of the horrors around him is devastating. You can practically see the childhood being ripped away from him. At the beginning, there is still so much innocence in him. By the end, you are looking at someone who has been completely changed by what he’s been forced to see. The film doesn’t just tell you that war destroys people. It makes you watch it happen. The performances are unbelievable. The camera work is unbelievable. There are moments where the camera almost feels like another character, trapping you inside these scenes and refusing to let you look away. The way the film captures fear, confusion, desperation, hatred, grief, and exhaustion is something I don’t think I’ve ever experienced in a movie before. There were moments where I wasn’t even thinking about the fact that I was watching a film. I was just sitting there completely horrified. And the connections between the characters make everything hurt even more. There is so much heartache here. So much humanity surrounded by so much evil. That’s what makes the film feel different from simply watching a collection of horrific events. You care about these people. You watch them suffer. You watch them lose pieces of themselves. And eventually, you realize just how much has been taken from them. I honestly don’t know what else a movie could have done to impact me more. There are movies that entertain you. Movies that make you think. Movies that make you cry. Movies that stay in your head for a few days after you watch them. And then there are movies like Come and See. This is the kind of movie that makes you sit in silence after the credits. The kind where you don’t immediately want to put on another movie because you need a minute. It made me think about war differently. It made me think about humanity differently. More than anything, it made me think about how easily innocence can be destroyed when people are surrounded by hatred and violence. I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever watched a film that made me feel this way. This isn’t only the best war film I’ve ever seen. I think it’s one of the best films ever made. And more importantly, I think it is one of the most necessary films ever made. I gave it a 5/5, but even that doesn’t really communicate how strongly I feel about it. This is the easiest 5/5 I will ever give. Not because it was enjoyable it absolutely wasn’t but because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film accomplish what this one does so completely. Come and See is horrifying. It’s devastating. It’s cruel. It’s unforgettable. And I think everyone should see it.
