Bring Her Back
No words can even put into perspective how
blown away I was by this movie. And I know that sounds all corny and cleche but I’m being as truthful as possible when I say that (I just didn’t know how to start the review)
But anyways, this movie has the full package. It’s heartfelt, brutally bone-chilling and extremely witty with how it crafts the mind this wicked antagonist in the film which is the first thing to talk about and maybe the most impressive aspect of this film.
This film really pissed me off, but for the right reasons. The mother in this movie was one of the most well crafted but also unlikable characters I’ve seen in a while. Without trying too spoil much, the way they crafted her to use manipulation so meticulously in this film to get her way is genius and also just heartbreaking to the victims of her emotional manipulation which is why this movie is also not only terrifying and physcological, but also genuinely heartfelt and grounded in so much reality aside from the supernatural horror elements.
The narrative of this movie is also built on the backhand of truama and the grief of loss to convey the characters motives and context behind certain emotions of the characters. For example, the Mother’s grief of her lost child is the sole fuel to her motive behind her acts. Nonetheless though, I still find it very difficult to spare an ounce of sympathy for her the more the movie goes on, considering what she did to everyone around her. While you can make a fair argument that the profound amount of grief the mother goes through because of the loss of her child were somewhat gut wrenching, the other children victims to her acts were even more devastating. Everyone was so innocent in a way before taken into the mother’s control and she ruined all of their lives for her dire but also selfish needs. That’s ultimately what trumps all the other aspects of grief in this film to make it so devastating
The last thing I’ve got to get to on this film was the acting which was just stellar all around. Especially Sally Hawkins who was amazing in this one, depicting the emotionally vulnerable side of her character equally as well as the psychopathic side. Also another person who stole the show was the child actor, Jonah Wren Phillips who played Oliver. He dosen't have much lines in this movie but his portrayal of this character is genuinely daunting and will make you feel the unsettling nature of this movie at full force. Danny and Michael Philippou, I was truly not familiar with y’all’s game. I’m sold that they’re the future of the horror filmmaking landscape along with guys like Parker Finn. Amazing movie and this one’s definitely gonna be hard to top for my movie of the year. I live for these physcological horror films
