Inglourious Basterds
The ultimate middle finger of all middle fingers. Brilliant, brutal, and unapologetic statement against the nazis and propaganda through cinema. One of those films you just can’t take your eyes off whatsoever. It’s bold, stylish, zipping, thrilling and a relentless depiction of the violence and tragedy during the time of nazi power. In this one, you feel the stakes in every scene, knowing that Nazi or military autonomy is lurking somewhere waiting to strike. Even when they’re not there, you see the fear in people’s eyes, watching what they say or do carefully with caved in close ups and anxious rippling edits.
Tarintino’s directing as I expected for his acclaim is infectious. If feel ultimately always extremely personal, in a sense that he couldn’t care less about how people feel about the violence or harsh choices the film choose to do to depict its narrative, but instead does it all for his own style and craft only, not caring to please anyone else. As I said it’s an unapologetic statement to his love for the style and pizzaz of filmmaking and its limitless capabilities like making an epic film with endless swagger about de-throning the nazis.
Not only does it tackle themes like revenge for trauma and pain inflicted by their power but it also tackles the idea of saving cinema from being captive to this Nazi propaganda. It’s also a love letter to film through this story in the coolest way possible. Performances are incredible here. Christoph Waltz gives a fantastic villian performance of someone so deep into the Nazi ideology that they can’t help but smile at murder in violence. It’s a seemingly persuasive and charismatic portrayal of this man seeing his smile every second but beneath it’s a matter of someone extremely vile and harsh in their belief that they’ll never realize the harm of it. Christoph with his expressions and tone all around embodied the most dangerous persona of someone relentless without remorse in their disgusting actions
Brad Pitt is amazing as well.Menacing and dominant with you feeling his position of power every time he comes onto screen but also grounded and charismatic with his joking approach at times attempting to sway the opposition. Also him trying to do an Italian accent and failing badly will never not be funny to me. The film is stylish and jazzy to see not only thanks to the performance and directing but also because of its mastery on a technical level.
Chaotic editing, perfect framing and shot selection building that suspense and tension, super cool montage editing. Gore and guns all over the place, not sparing an ounce of sympathy for the harsh violence the Germans inflicted on so many for years. The film has it all to make the most aggressively entertaining and fun portrayal of a topic this serious. One of those that threads the needle of substance and importance messages with the thrill of entertainment. How can you not love it? I love it. Tarintino’s masterpiece as we all have said
