this and the northman have always been weird blind spots in eggers filmography for me. i first got into his work when the lighthouse came out, somehow skipped the northman and then jumped straight to nosferatu, which is now one of my all time favourites. with the werwulf trailer finally dropping, it felt like the perfect time to go back and watch his films in order to see how he’s progressed over the years while filling in those gaps. honestly it’s an impressive debut and definitely one i can see growing on me with every rewatch. there was this looming sense of purity and religious dread hanging over everything, and it’s exactly the kind of horror that does it for me (i’ll take this over jump scares any day). i especially love when spaces or objects, in this case the forest, feel like their own character. with the forest being the rural world they live in, it has this constant, inescapable presence hanging over everything. i can already tell it’s one of those films that i’ll appreciate its themes the more i sit with it.

just agamemnon aura farming with his 2 seconds of screen time
