Lady Bird
Was I ever a teenage girl? No. But I did go to Catholic school and did theater, and there’s something about this movie that is so authentic to that experience.
The feeling of wanting to leave your hometown, to constantly be thinking about the next phase of your life that you didn’t stop to enjoy your current time and place.
The movie’s nuance with which it approaches this very specific catholic school environment is also interesting. Lady Bird spends the movie trying to escape from it and enter the “real” world, but later realizes how much of a comforting presence this environment could be. How there were individual people within it who shaped who she was, even if she doesn’t stick with religion. It reminds her of the care her family took towards her upbringing.
Everyone in this movie is messy, complicated, and imperfect, and that’s beautiful and relatable. I love you Greta Gerwig
