Up
Decided to revisit Up, for the first time in probably 6-7 years.
To my suprise, it was much better than i remembered. And i’ve gotten a much higher appreciation for it. When i was younger, my ass was to immature to really feel or truly understand the pain within the opening sequence. So while i now understand why the opening is so beloved, i still prefer the 3rd act of the film. And specifically the scene that the opening builds up to. That scene being when carl opens the final pages of the book. And later on, when the house floats down, and carl looks at it one final time. I shed a few tears, and i found the message about letting go, so beautiful.
I also forgot how much of a fucking menace Charles Munz is. Like, that dinner scene actually gave me fucking shivers. The fact that he uncaringly murders people and later on, children (at least attempted), just out of self interest. And the scene where he set fire to the house to make carl have to make the difficult choice, was despicable as hell, and just broke me to my core. No matter how many times i’ve seen Up.
The humor hit the same spots as before, but not much memorable, doesent degrade or improve the quality of the film in any way. From a technical perspective though, almost everything is perfect imo. The animation is colorful, beautiful, crisp, but gritty and dark when it needs to be. Michael Giacchino’s score is also just beyond perfect. It is imo his best work, and compliments the bombastic chase and action scenes, as well as the somber and emotionally driven scenes, so effortlessly.
Not the best film from Pixar, but defo in their top 5 imo. Felt great to revisit.
