Fargo
There's more to life than a little bit of money, but here ya are, and it's a beautiful day
Some quick hits:
- the score is so beautifully haunting, and such a perfect match and complement to the tone and atmosphere of the film.
- "a little funny-looking" is so funny. Buscemi is a real cool dude to go along with that. We need more little funny-looking dudes in Hollywood
- I feel like a lot of the analysis into this movie, while interesting to think about, is reaching, particularly the Dark Marge theory. While I think her meetup with Mike Yanagita makes her harder to pin down, her arc as someone who sees the bright side of life and is only fooled by the world being an even darker place than she expects seems very straightforward.
- I love how the "Midwestern hospitality" and mannerisms are both an honest part of every character, AND a weapon wielded by many throughout the film. It isn't added just to make the characters quirky, it is used to build tension, showcase character intentions and add depth to dialogue, and brings a lot of unusual, unpredictable dialogue. The Coens know how to direct their own dialogue, you see the same thing in The Big Lebowski. It's a masterclass.
So cozy for a dark, cold movie
