The Fly
I'm sure Typhoid Mary was a very nice person too, when you met her socially.
Perhaps the best Cronenberg, both because of its accessibility and its world building; it begins as a romantic sci-fi drama, taking the time to properly develop Veronica and Seth's characters and the flawed technology, before descending into a gruesome, tragic horror.
This is 35 years old and the special effects for the transformation are STILL stomach-churning! Goldblum and Davis are VERY 80's, and Goldblum especially is an unconventional romantic lead. Davis is America's Sweetheart in this, she's absolutely lovely and I was very drawn to her performance.
What more can I say about this? I liked how quickly it gets to the meat of the story. I loved the set pieces! I liked how skeezy the boss was, but was okay at the end. I liked the thread of lost and regained humanity woven throughout the story. I liked Cronenberg's charmingly incorrect understanding of computers (Seth could have been unfathomably rich from the natural language processing and deductive powers of his computer alone). For any complaint I could have about flaws in the the production, I'd just say "it was the 80's"!
