The combination of the grotesque with the brutality and absurdity of war proved a brilliant idea, and the ending, which filled the film with authentic footage from World War II and Hitler's rise to power, created one of the most disturbing and thought-provoking endings in cinematic history.
Despite the lack of professional actors on set, their performances deliver first-rate emotional punches, and the facial expressions of the main character, played by Alexei Kravchenko, are incredibly realistic.
