Remember Me
Rarely am I this conflicted about a film in all its entirety. Because i genuinely was interested in this film and its character arcs, sentimentality, and the depth of emotion. I was sold. But there was just so much here that lacked depth in its purpose and wholeness within these people to where the ending just did not work in its entire message.
It’s very rare for a film such as Remember Me to work. I mean this in that they use grave tragedies to drive a home a point to the audience about the unpredictability of our lives and the “living to the fullest” sloga (i.e. Polytechnique, Boy in the Striped Pyjamas). In fact the only real GOOD example that doesn’t play with the appeals to pathos on the audience is Gus Van Sant’s Elephant. That film entirely executes it that way for the betterment of letting its audience think for themselves with what the concrete, real societal issue at hand is. This film honestly throws that away out and uses the WTC attacks as an emotional ploy, deeming it pointless (also considering that its release, 2010, two years into Obama’s presidency, the country was headed into an entirely different direction from the Bush era, also deeming this twist insignificant and bastardizing the events without any authentic depictions of the timeframe that actually allow the audience to have concrete discourse)
Anyway, for anyone who hated how this movie ended but really or somewhat enjoyed it prior to the ending i recommend Garden State (2004), basically the same film just no 9/11 or little sisters or angry rob pattinson.
