Your Name.
Watched on blu-ray
Masterpiece. Unbelievably melancholic. What the hell. I was not expecting so much emotion packed into such a short runtime. Felt like a dream that I didn’t want to wake up from. It captures the feelings of connections with others and the dreams and experiences you have so freaking well I can’t believe it. The first half lures you in with the amusing and fun body switching rom com, and about halfway thru it becomes something of a transcendent cosmic experience going against the laws of time and nature in the most beautiful way possible. It manages to capture some of the most everyday experiences And interactions in such a genuine manner that makes it absolutely fun to watch from an outsiders perspective. That feeling of losing the memory of an amazing dream, desperately trying to get it back and remember some small fragment of the warmth it brought you in your sleep... This is what Your Name displays perfectly. It is such a beautifully animated and well produced work of art. We’re given so many beautiful shots of landscapes, Tokyo, and just nature in general that adds to the dream-like feeling of it all. The score by RADWIMPS is phenomenal as well, with elevated strings, piano, and orchestral sounds that make you feel just so damn comfortable. The film hits so hard in its midpoint that this makes it the sort of film you should absolutely go into knowing little to nothing about the premise. Structurally in its story, Your Name handles every single one of its emotional beats so well. Themes of connection, time, dreams, and the experiences you share with other people make Your Name one of the best animated films I have ever seen, and maybe even one of the best films I have ever seen period.
