The Penguin
this show was the best show i’ve seen this year. i have nothing bad to write about. all i can say is that i need the batman part II right now. i need to see my falcone sisters right now. im just preparing myself for the fact that im going to hyperfixate so bad on them.
these are my thoughts and serializd reviews for some of the episodes below. because i do not have the energy to write a new review.
THE PENGUIN EP1
woah. i had average expectations for this but it actually turned out to be so great. it caught me so off guard, i really wasn’t expecting to love it as much as i did. such a great start to this limited series. all i wanted from this show was some good cinematography, world-building and something that was completely different than matt reeves’ film and yet, somehow also wanting for it to stay true to the movie. and it did that. the opening scene, with the orange-ish color grading and ‘the batman’ theme playing instantly gave me chills. that’s when i knew i’d love this. i didn’t realize how much i missed the batman movie and gotham city until now.
i won’t lie, oswald was never someone i cared about in the dc world but Colin Farrell does such a great job here as the penguin. one episode in, and im already excited to see what he does with the character and his dynamic with vic. he’s already growing on me. also… Cristin Milioti!! oh my god. she is amazing. i really believe she’s going to be the driving force of this show because as soon as sofia falcone walked in, i was immediately unsettled by the way she carried herself and spoke with such disdain and you can immediately tell there’s something so off about her. the actress does her crazy eyes so well too. i fucking love it.
by the way, i’d like to add…. my favourite thing about this episode was when ‘the promise’ by when in rome started playing in oswald’s car while he beats the guy up. yeah, i had a huge grin on my face for three fucking seconds. i love that song. LISA FRANKENSTEIN MENTIONNNNN ARHHHGG
THE PENGUIN EP4 (which is my favourite episode)
“I’m not gonna make it. I’m not gonna make it in a place like that. I’m gonna die in there. I’m gonna die in there and he knows it. he knows it. That’s what he wants.”
THEY GOT WHAT THEY DESERVED. oh my fucking god. oh my fucking god. oh my fucking god. it’s easy to say that this is the best tv episode i’ve seen this year and nothing comes close to this. We’re four episodes in and Sofia Falcone is in my top three dc characters already. i finished this episode with a huge smile on my face. i was so glad to see her get her long overdue revenge. Sofia Falcone is so well created, so well written, so well performed. i didn’t expect a sofia falcone centric episode so soon, but i’m glad that we got one. there was a montage during sofia falcone’s six month time in arkham asylum before the trial where we see her daily routine, and her slowly losing herself. and i found that to be extremely sad. seeing her character journey and the reason why she is the way she is now was surprisingly sad to watch. despite knowing that she’s a villain. i felt like it was very easy to be sympathetic towards her. she already has one of the best arcs as a villain. this is what you get when you make a woman the showrunner. just absolute perfection.
if they keep up with the same character writing, i can definitely see Sofia Falcone being amongst the best female characters we’ve ever gotten. and a large part of it is all because of Cristin Milioti. She is the definition of the perfect casting. if the emmy’s don’t give her the award that she deserves next year, they will be hearing from me.
THE PENGUIN EP8
the longest fucking episode and would’ve been the best one if it wasn’t for sofia falcone’s episode. I’m sorry i will never shut up about that episode and her character. Sofia is my favourite character, and she would’ve rather died than go back to the place that ruined her. i can’t believe she went back there. she deserved so much better. she never wanted to go back. she just got out. shes absolutely tragic. ALSO the killing of vic is something i already saw coming but it was still so upsetting to watch. i think we did definitely needed it to remind us why penguin is the bad guy. OZWALD COBB COUNT YOUR DAYS.
All i wanted in this world was for sofia gigante to share a screen with her half sister selina kyle and now i know that we are definitely getting that, and i’m excited to see where matt reeves goes with that. I loved the conclusion of this show. The bat signal being the last shot to the show just felt like the perfect start to the batman sequel. And i just simply cannot wait.
