Poor Things
Wow, this was incredible. There's absolutely so much to dig into and I feel like I'll need a ton of re-watch but here were some things that struck me on the first watch:Lanthimos' use of colour to imbue in the audience a feeling of newness and almost sensory overload for Bella in the first act, especially. The costume design was fantastic, really loved the way they used puffy-shouldered dresses and gowns to sort of physically infantalize the character. The sets were reminiscent of old Hollywood sound stages, I half expected there to be musical numbers once they got to Lisbon.Emma Stone is going to get a Best Actress nom, and I wouldn't be surprised if Ruffalo gets a Supporting nod.
This film is Lanthimos' ode to the sensation of discovery, all the good and the bad. And it comes through beautifully in every single frame.
