i love me a serial killer/fbi story and this film knocks it out of the park. nicholas cage is TERRIFYING, both wanting and deserving the oscar for this one and maika monroe is terrific as well. there were several points where i watched in awe at some of the cinematography and lighting. everything felt purposeful and meaningful, moving the plot along and i appreciated how complete this film felt, even with the shorter runtime. this film has you constantly second guessing yourself and is really good at catching you off guard, especially in the third act. despite being a thriller, i had fun trying to decipher the many clues left behind for monroe’s character, agent lee, and relished in the uncertainty and uneasiness of it all. even now, i’m still piecing my thoughts together. this one just worked for me and is probably the best movie i’ve seen this year so far.
