Black Swan
“I just want to be perfect”
Completely NOT what I was expecting from this film but I absolutely loved it. It captures so much of what the artistic sport industry demands from a person, the reality of what we applaud and admire on a lit up stage or a big screen and how it’s built behind the scenes in toxicity, pressure and abuse, how dangerous “perfection” can become when it becomes more of an obsession or compulsion rather than a goal or a desire. We watch slowly as Nina begins to crave excellence and consume the idea of “perfection” before it soon takes over her mind entirely which we ultimately see what this drives her to do/think. It’s interesting to see what extreme measures a girl will go through when she wants something so bad but surprisingly it wasn’t superficial or extremely unrealistic to me. Overall I would say this film was beautiful, disturbing and a reminder of how much greatness can cost you in such a head-space.
