Adolescence
Everyone is talking about the “I’m sorry son. I should’ve done better” but not enough people are talking about “most boys would’ve touched her, so that makes me better.” I think it’s so relevant to the way young men treat women with the social media fueled resurgence of ultra sexism. He says that after stabbing a fellow classmate, a thirteen year old girl who rejected him, seven times. Seven. And yet he still clings to this idea that he’s morally superior for not sexually assaulting her, like that somehow redeems him.
That twisted logic, is exactly the kind of self-justification we see echoed in real life. It’s not even basic decency he’s claiming, it’s a warped sense of righteousness built on the idea that the bar for men is so low, anything short of assault is a virtue because women just don’t deserve any better. And the only reason that assault crosses a line while murder doesn’t is because he didn’t see her as a person just an object to take from, so now he’s boasting that he had the self control to not take from it!
