Inception
genuinely maybe the perfect movie. my 3rd eye has been opened.
at its core inception isn’t just a sci-fi heist movie, it’s a love letter to the medium of film as an artform. films immerse us into realities that don’t exist yet still make us care about the emotional stakes. inception takes that idea and makes it literal. dreams and films are interchangeable within the plot, the act of dream construction is a metaphor for filmmaking itself. cobb is the director, ariadne the set designer, and mal represents the doubt, obsession, and the intrusive emotions that artists feel when creating.
the spinning top at the end of the film never gets an answer. does it fall? is cobb awake or still dreaming? was it real? everyone gets hung up on these questions, theorising about if anything in the film actually happened or not etc but the answers don’t matter. the brilliance lies in the fact that we even ask these questions at all. bc it’s obviously not real. it’s a film. “was it real?” becomes the ultimate expression of what film does to us. films are not real yet (sometimes) we walk out of the theatre changed, feeling deeply for what we just watched. reality is you watching the movie. reality is your friend sitting next to you. not whether a spinning top in a film fell over or not. but for a few hours you were immersed in another reality. and you cared. you cared about whether this fictional man actually reunited with his fictional children. that’s the magic of film and nolan captures it perfectly with this movie. I LOVE YOU INCEPTION 🫰
