Life
Late in 2022, I migrated from IMDB to Letterboxd to keep track of my movie addictions. At that time, I had more than 2500 films rated (and only 4 reviews. It just wasn't "fun" to write reviews on IMDB.) So, about half of the movies that I have rated have no reviews. I'll never fill them all in, BUT I thought I should fill in, at least, reviews for my 5-star films.
I am extraordinary stingy with my 5-star rankings. My criteria for a 5 star that the film is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE movies. It has to have spoken to me and helped shape me as a person. Movies, for me, can only earn a 5-star rating after spending some time with a 4 1/2 and then being reassessed after a second viewing and/or after the passage of at least 6 months of time. These, in my opinion are the BEST of the BEST. About than 1.4% of the movies that I rate earn 5 stars.
Why is Life (2009) a 5 Star Movie for Me
The best BBC documentaries (they are all GREAT, but a few rise to SUPERIOR) are life changing. If you really watch, if you take them in and marvel at the unbelievable camerawork that show you the wonders of our universe, you are not the same person after watching that you were before. They take you to places that you have been inaccessible for 99.999% of humans time on Earth. They are simply phenomenal. Life is one of the best.
What is sometimes underappreciated is the dedication of the editors, directors, and cameramen when creating these spectacles. For the 10 part Life series more than 1800 hours of footage were captured, which equates to 300 terabytes of data across 29 countries on six continents. This was then edited into 473 minutes. They used .4% of the film that they shot. No other film production does anything like that.
