The Beatles: Get Back
What an amazing bit of music history caught on film and brilliantly edited and assembled by Peter Jackson. I really did feel like a fly on the wall.
I have a few thoughts:
First of all, I felt that watching this very much humanized the Beatles for me. There is a scene at the end of Amadeus where Mozart just calls out the notes to Salieri who transcribes them. The music was already written in his head. I always very much thought that the Beatles songs sort of came to Paul and John and they would just come into the studio and say, "Hey, listen to this". Watching the process of the songs come together was eye opening.
Secondly, the Beatles were NOT prima donnas. You hear stories of some of the Rock stars who need this and that to work and who still complain and throw tantrums. There was none of this. Occasionally they got frustrated, but they were really just four lads with amazing talent.
Finally, I came up with a theory a long time ago that it is the perfect simplicity of the songs that make the Beatles timeless. The songs are not Shakespeare or Faulkner, they are songs of the everyman (except for perhaps some in their psychedelic period) and they will be around forever.
