True Stories
True Stories is a film that I love on many levels.
First of all there is the music. David Byrne is a musical chameleon--and with the music from this film (and the album), he departed from the well known alt-rock, new wave of previous Talking Heads albums. The music brings in elements of country, world music, and pop rock. It is, generally a happy. In the film, all of the Talking Heads songs (except one) are sung by characters in the film, with a very different sound than they have on the album...but they are still great. I recommend listening to the album at some point either before watching or after.
The visual style of this film is extraordinary. The best way to describe it is Wes Anderson before Wes Anderson (who I absolutely love). This movie came out 10 years before Wes's first film. I wonder if he every saw--and gained inspiration--from this film.
Finally, there is the nostalgia factor. This film really is a time capsule to the mid 80s (in Texas, at least). The way it talks about businesses, computers, innovation, and even malls caught a moment in time which is, in many case, now disappearing.
I love this film. You will too.
