La Haine
i almost don’t know what to even say about this film or where to start. the entire film felt so raw, almost as if you were living in it. the characters were interesting and shared dynamics which felt like real friendships. i felt so much tension during many scenes, caused by the genuineness of the film. cinematography was also beautiful throughout the film too, and the black and white really makes it fit the tone of this movie.
vinz is a character who shows his hate towards cops and repeats throughout the film how he will kill one. once given the opportunity, he is unable to bring himself to do it, even aware of the fact his friend, abdel had been announced dead due to the riot which he was severely injured in. it truely shows how throughout the entire film, he puts on a persona where he constantly talks about how he will kill a cop, but once the opportunity is handed to him, his true heart comes out and guides him through a different path.
hubert, who is more mature than his friends in this group, is aware of the world they live in. it’s shown how he wants to escape this place throughout the film. i really like this about hubert’s character as he’s smart to realise his surroundings and wants to escape.
i love the quote,
“heard about the guy who fell off a skyscraper? on his way down past each floor, he kept saying to reassure himself: 'so far so good... so far so good... so far so good.' how you fall doesn't matter. it’s how you land.”
as it explains the film really well through a single quote. it shows how the film follows the journey of these 3 boys as their friend is in hospital after the riots and how everything seems ‘so far so good’ (in a way) until that last couple minutes of the film play and that’s how they land. this created a really impactful ending and i love how it can be linked to this quote, repeated multiple times throughout the film.
