The Moment
What an odd movie.
The only thing I knew about this movie prior to watching was that it was about charli XCX, and the trailer looked like the film could be good research for a college project, so I bit the bullet and went to watch it In the cinema.
I like charli. But I’m not a super fan by any meaning of the word, but I’m aware of her presence and her music. This film flipped what I knew about her on its head, being a great commentary on the hostility of the music industry and how Hollywood and the music industry intertwine and destroy anything that stands out creatively in its wake, making everything fit in, and destroying the creative freedom that makes art so freeing. This concept could’ve worked as an original film, but tying it to a real person who the audience is familiar with makes it hit home a lot better. We know that charli didn’t back down irl, and she made the show that she wanted, but this film really hammered home how hard that is to do, and showed us what could just have easily have happened, as it happens to countless artists in a regular basis.
Overall, a very great insight into the darker truth of the music industry, and a very unique film overall.
