The Sheep Detectives
A strange, fun movie that had absolutely no right being as good as it was. What should have been just another forgettable kids movie ended up being a rather interesting and unique film that wasn’t afraid to go to dark places, much darker than you’d expect for a talking sheep movie. Hugh Jackman was a delight in the limited screen time he had, and the rest of the cast were very fun with what they were given.
The final twist was also really good too, I didn’t see it coming.. although I don’t think I’ve ever correctly predicted the killer in a mystery film.
The film also deals with concepts of grief and discrimination in ways that I found surprising for this kind of film, it had a few scenes that were completely serious in tone when dealing with serious topics, avoiding the trap that most kids movies fall into these days by undercutting them with a joke or quip, while still being plenty funny in other scenes. It had plenty of really stupid jokes that I really shouldn’t find funny as a fully grown adult, but still made me smile, if not fully laugh.
Overall, this was a fun, although not mind blowing movie that I enjoyed way more than I thought I was going to.. check it out if you were considering it.
