Better Call Saul
this review does contains serious spoilers
Absolutely incredible show man oh my god they made this so well done. Better call Saul gave me a vibe of a nice comfort show in a sense to begin with and then took som SERIOUS dark turns. From start to finish, this show delivered with season 1 being pretty solid and comparable to breaking bass season 1. It had some great character introductions and while some say these episodes are consistent, I didn’t find it that way. Some episodes like ep2 in s1 or ep9 or ep3/4 in s1 were absolutely incredible but episodes 5 and like 7 weren’t as good. My biggest problem was some of the episodes in season 2 where I acctually got bored of the show at a point and had a few parts where I wanted to quit (I think around the first few episodes) but even eseason2 delivered really well with the final half especially the episode where chuck recorded jimmy. This show relly made the environment of the characters so well and really invested you into everything they did no matter how basic or small. In s3 I was truly hooked with start to finish episodes FANTASTIC. They truly had something to it and especially the big ones like lantern and chicanery oh my god, absolutely INCREDIBLY made. Chuck really starred in this season and overall he was such and I can’t stress enough, such a well written character in all 3 season. I did not expect him at all to die in lantern and his death was absolutely incredibly done. Chucks acting from McKean was phenomenal throughout the show especially in chicanery where his character and acting absolutely were the highlight. Better call Saul’s plot went through many different directions over time especially jimmys. I would also like to add Kim wrecker had a great character throughout too and paired with jimmy she and him made for some fantastic writing. Moving on to season 4 of this show, it was honestly so good throughout. After finishing the show I feel even more love for season 4s Saul parts like the phone business and things. We had some great and great character stuff from Saul after his brothers death especially with Howard. They really maximised the output of chucks death in this season and paired it along with all of the many entertaining parts in season 4. I would say the average season 4 episode was better than the average season 3 episode and the ending was on par with lantern. (Chucks death in lantern however was js so much for me and so unexpected- definetly most unexpected and crazy death I have seen in any show that left me shocked for a whole) so I would give it lantern in the end. Winner but oh my, it was so good ON BOTH SIDES. Mikes side and jimmys side both delivered. Saul using the whole speech faking us all out and bringing the birth of Saul Goodman was spectacular. Kim and Saul’s relation hits the peak so far in this with Kim still being moral and Saul slowly changing. It really is even better to see this show after the ending as it shines a whole new light and makes you appreciate every little bit much more, which is how o believe better call Saul should be reviewed and understood. Season 5 somehow got WVEN better omg from start to finish season 5a average blew the roof of the standard. Every episode was phenomenal, and especially the final episodes omg. This truly marked the ‘breaking bad’ phase of better call Saul in my opinion with the worlds mixing of Saul and the cartel. It is truly magical to see and man episodes like Bagman and infact all 3 of the final were the toppers of top tiers. I would say Kim and Saul’s relation absolutely peaked here from throughout the entire show and Kim slowly changes more and more. The caharcster development in this show reaches all characters so well my god. Every single character till the end is done basically perfectly even the ones mostly in breaking bad such as Gustavo. In better call Saul we get a greater expansion of the gilliganverse universe and understand thoroughly a lot more. I must say after season 5 I had already declared this shows world building better than breaking bads. It’s world building is genuinely perfect. Now moving on to season 6, oh my word FROM START TO FINISH IT IS BANGERS AFTER BANGERS. This was literally imo overall better than season 4 of brba which was my second fav season in breaking bad. In the start Kim has now fully changed and Saul and her have become so morally corrupt. We have so much fun seeing Howard get bullied by them and being invested in these simple acts. The cartel mix with them is just the abolsute best you are appreciating every episode as its own season to this point. Literally no episode dragged down and it was in season 5,6,4,3 I truly understood the consistency reputation given to better call Saul. However even with this reputation there was a gap. My god, the 3 episodes together, point and shoot, plan and execution, fun and games, an absolute perfect trio. IMO the symbol of better call Saul. It had literally everything it was better call Saul at its finest and at its base. The way the worlds collide is extraordinary and it’s honestly fine writing. As we go along to the black and white parts you truly understand Saul’s character to its fullest where we could never reach in breaking bad. The black and white episodes were all BANGERS and really made you reflect incredibly deeply on literally every episode in Colour pregiously. These episodes, reflected on the criminal morals of Saul and acctually built up to the finale incredibly well. All of the episodes were incredibly entertaining and the flashbacks in some of them were spectacular. Seeing characters from before at this point especially chuck and the breaking bad ones and Kim was another experience even through the flashbacks. Finally to go through Saul gone felt like a complete movie (it was even the length of one) it really had everything a finale for this show needed and gave me some winner vibes from the speech and confession he gave. The ending of this show fully made you understand the show and had me rating it with a completely new perspective that smashed any rating I would’ve previously given it. Better call Saul is for sure a competitor to breaking bad but in the end for me breaking bad as character development and writing was just too much to give this to better call Saul however it is DANGEROUSLY close.
Now onto the perespective of Mike and the cartel side of better call Saul. This was a really unique thing we had got as it shows two worlds pretty closely connected but very distinct and deserved of separation battle the screen time of the show. Mike and the cartel scenes were always fun and had the strict breaking bad theme and vibe to it. Seeing the characters from breaking bad in the cartel was already good, but it was even better with the great action scenes and the fantastic character development from Mike. The tension throughout whichever Salamanca it was against Gustavo and Mike was fantastic and the cartel part slowly got better by every season. In season 2 it hit another level with Mike’s parts and then it hit another with the tension using nacho 8’ seaosn 3. Nacho was a fantastic side character with a very Jesse vibe to him. He is easily one of my favourite characters and his real feel made the cartel have another vibe. Season 4 with the whole German engineer stuff was absolutely fantastic with the beginning of some serious Mike caharacter stuff and the death of Werner Ziegler in winner was beautifully made. To continue off that the greatest addition to the cartel world was Lalo Salamanca, arguably the greatest villain I have seen (close competitor to Gustavo I need more time to decide which is better). Lalo is a super unique psychopath and is done so so well and written great. His presence instills fear and you can feel how terrifying he is through the screen. His jokes and funny vibe put him on a different category of psychopath and really creep you out. In season 5 we had even better csrtel stuff with Lalo (Jorge de Guzman) finally fully connecting the world between Saul and the cartel world. Lalo is an absolute demogorgon with all the stuff he does and from Bagman onwards it was absolutely peak. The scene with bad choice road and Lalo was terrifying and the ending when Lalo gets manhunted was omg absolutely fantastic. Easily Lalo carried in the last 2 episodes of season 5. However, he doesn’t stop there. In season 6 he keeps pulling off his manipulation feats and creepiness planning to kill Gus. This increases tensions in the cartel world and brings nacho to die aswell an absolutely greatly done death which was very unexpected. Nacho will be known as one of my favourite side characters. Lalo Salamanca also carries in plan and execution which when the Howard drama reaches its peak Lalo comes and somehow clashes the world of Howard Hamlin with his and shoots him dead just like that. This marked one of the craziest parts for me because I had never expected Howard to die like EVER and it just shows you how well the writing of this show is. Point and shoot absolutely astonished me. The BEST better call Saul episode with so many good stuff, I really thought it was the death of Kim wexler snd it looked really close. This officially brought hr e climax of the 3 episode masterpiece in season 6. Lalos death and Gustavo’s speech was extroarfinary and the burial was something else of the worlds that should not have collided. Gustavo’s speech really makes you think how breaking bad would feel after having watched better call Saul knowing what he said. Fun and games as well was so incredibly done as it brought the ‘finale’ of the prequel. Kim’s leaving the law was shocking enough and then breaking up with Saul was something else. This episode showed the after effects of the crazy things that happened previously and was so well done.
To end it off. Better call Saul was absolutely an incredible show with so many fantastic moments. It’s characters are close to breaking bad level and its development is on it’s level. The worlds colliding is so unique and well done and the show truly gives you a new perespective to view when watching it after the ending. Once you finish better call Saul you can truly piece together what this show meant and how Saul was like the entire time hinted through chuck and all the others who had criticized him. Ending in the same manner Kim and Saul are personally the best duo in the villiganverse history followed VERY VERY closely by Walter and Jesse (I need more time to make a final decision as it’s very close). The edits of better call Saul are also fantastic with so much material to work with through the large display of Saul’s character. Mikes character was also well done throughout this and ofcoise we understood and learnt more. One more thing I need to say about better call Saul is it gave us a new view on the cartel through jimmy’s lens and made us fear it more unlike breaking bads lens when we saw it through a meth kingpin himself.
Finally, to end it off I would say this is a very close competition with breaking bad and I need some more time to decide which one is better however it does lean towards breaking bad due to how i felt in the show, but better call Saul. It’s basically perfect after you finish it. One great big movie it feels like just like breaking bad made me feel like.
