Superman
Superman is not one of the superheroes I’ve ever been especially interested in. I’m not a cynical person by any means but growing up and entering adulthood I was never really impressed by him or the way he was portrayed. He’s just this conventionally attractive super powerful guy who does the right thing which if I’m being so for real is kind of boring. Additionally, sometimes hope and optimism can come off as cringe or unrealistic and so I was quite wary going into this experience (I think Marvel is also to blame a bit but that’s a Letterboxd entry for another day).
This movie was the first time I was sold on Superman. It humanized him but still provided the audience with killer action sequences and really clever fight strategies. And it made me WANT to appreciate life and care and be thoughtful and kind to people. I cried 3 times and not even because I was particularly sad but because I felt so warmed and touched by how beautifully Superman understands and appreciates EVERYTHING about humanity. Even though Nicholas Hoult jumpscared me with the accent, I really enjoyed his take on Lex too. UGH I adored this adaptation and the cast being all stunners certainly helps as well. Okay rant over - go watch Superman.
