A Clockwork Orange
going into this film, i was prepared to be far more confused than i thought i would be but it’s surprisingly very straightforward.
it is directly quoted: “we’re not concerned with motives for the higher ethics, we are concerned only with cutting down crime” so yeah it’s basically be forced into goodness with a loss of your own human agency or willingly be a downright terrible person.
what really sells this whole thing for me though has to be Malcolm McDowell’s performance as Alex, i mean as soon as the opening shot starts he already looks chilling. then there’s the whole witty narrator gimmick he has going on while we see him do some of the most gruesome things ever which is a nice contrast to most portrayals of psychopathic characters. this performance mixed with Kubrick’s amazing visuals and immaculate use of music had me locked in the ENTIRE time.
also of course Kubrick would put the Space Odyssey vinyl in as an easter egg.
