The Bride!
This movie was absolutely brilliant and I don’t fully understand why nobody sees this, obviously it was bold in its stylistic decision, the way it’s put together and even the storyline itself but it worked.
The storyline itself here was revolutionary in terms of the twist on the story, this was not a movie about Frankenstein’s bride, this was a feminist movement. Not only in the way that it is directed by a woman, something that is still shockingly rare in the modern day, but also the way this was created to make the plot mirror the lives of women both past and present, the lack of choice, the way things are forced upon women without us having a choice in the matter. Controversially, this is why I believe this hasn’t had a great reception, men just don’t understand this fully, the little choice we still have in a world that tries to convince us that we are still equal when we truly are not.
Honestly, the pacing of the movie was on point, it was beautifully choreographed as a movie to not only keep audiences engaged but to also mirror the chaos in the events unfolding. Not only this but the costume design, makeup and hair were all beautiful throughout with Jessie Buckley and Cristian Bale perfectly looking mental, in a good way.
Another thing I feel I have to comment upon is the way that people are disliking this movie because of the way it looks like Folie a Deux, like yes it does but just because that was crap doesn’t mean that this movie is too. Instead, that style worked perfectly with this story, again mirroring the unconventional tale told here, made by Maggie Gyllenhaal to be directed in a similarly unconventional way.
The performance of Jessie Buckley is another one that needs not to be under looked, she was wonderful in a totally contrasting way to Hamnet, proving that she is going to be one of the greatest actresses in the coming years. Christian Bale was also great but was nothing compared to her performance, but honestly who could be against that powerhouse.
In the end, this movie was altogether powerful and I’m mesmerised by what Maggie Gyllenhall has done with this story and character to make it more than what it used to be, absolutely phenomenal all around.
