Incredible story, and Denzel is always gonna Denzel. But the convoluted script doesn’t allow him to fully shine, especially with some mediocre directing and every performance outside of his being unremarkable bordering on not good. There’s only like 10 seconds of actual boxing, which *would* be fine, if the poster/marketing didn’t brand it a tale of the wrongly-accused champ’s fighting life before jail. Unfortunately, you’re better off sticking to the Dylan song. If this movie did anything (other than advance my quest to watch every Denzel film), it sparked an interest in reading Carter’s autobiography.
