Day 30 Of My October Horrorthon
Another one of my favourite horror movies, I’m not normally a fan of found footage, it’s such a marmite genre for me, it either works or doesn’t, but in this film it works so fucking well. It could be a multitude of things from the realistic feeling of the While Your Asleep which actually feels like a real show due to the multiple takes and the “I messed up let’s record again” that get left in, the behind the scenes of them messing around in the fire station or the realistic aspect of them tell the firemen how they set up shots and how there recording will go, to the 10 minute section midway through were they just interview people. Another plus is the fact they got a real TV presenter & Firemen to play the parts, or it could be the cameraman/camera don’t just feel like a device, but actually feel part of the cast, it isn’t just a gimmick the cameraman is being spoken to and reacted to with multiple characters addressing him which many found footage films fail to do, but it just gels so well, it all comes together to feel extremely realistic and if I didn’t know any better I would assume it’s real. As for the horror this is a slow start but I love that because we find out in real time what’s happening, we are clueless and swept up in the mystery and that unravels before us and that helps to add to the feeling that While Your Asleep is a real show. It contains some of the best/most memorable jumpscares I’ve seen in my life which don’t hit the same on a rewatch but that’s because you remember them, and you remember them because of how effective they are, how you reacted the first time to it and how memorable they are. The gore is top notch, the final 30 minutes and especially the last 5 minutes are some of the most tense and scariest scenes in a film ever put to screen that I’ve seen, and another aspect that I won’t spoil but I absolutely love because it flips the story and the genre on its head as a whole, ok I’ll stop rambling but I hope I’ve convinced you to check this one out, it’s short and sweet but it’s effective and hits that horror spot everytime
