The plot is straight out of the 2000s, the stars only became household names this past year or so and the main relationship dynamic is very 2020s booktok. The only thing remotely 2018 about this movie is Pete Davidson.

A cute concept and a great supporting cast (underrated aspect of romcoms) but the lead couple just kinda…sucks. Hugh Grant is factory made to be the perfect rom-com lead so he elevates the subpar material a bit, and he’s the one we spend most of our time with so his charm really does go very far. But his relationship with Andie MacDowell is such an absolute nothingburger, and is not nearly enough to carry a whole romance movie.

Every time I rewatch one of these movies about highs school that I loved when I was in high school, I assume that they’ll feel dated or immature or cringy. And I’m almost always pleasantly surprised with how well they have held up. Still a terrific film!

Oscar winner Kieran Culkin had that shit on.
