Babylon
Babylon excells on a technical level: acting, scenarios, direction... The amazing music! It is so good that I've been listening to the soundtrack since it came out.
The film is a love letter to cinema but also a critique to its culture, a comment on the rise and fall of stars and a cynical take on what Hollywood was or is. Just as in Whiplash, Chazelle raises the question: is the art they make worth all the suffering? Hell is a theme through the film, but in the end the audience -and Manny- watch the movie, creates memories, feels and remembers all the good stuff, and that is why we love cinema.
Sadly, all those topics hurt the script, as it is too much to handle and by the final act it hardly holds it together.
