McCarthy truly gets horror. Once again, he embraces all the supernatural-creepy elements: a secluded hotel, a haunted room, a witch, the ghost... And elevates all those elements through great setups and payoffs; although, unlike in a detective film once the payout happens it doesn't feel like a satisfying eureka, but an intense dread and fear of what's lurking in the dark. Talking about darkness, my god he knows when to show the monster or how to keep it not really in the light so it feels even worse as you known it's there but you can fully see it.
Probably my favorite horror of the year, it had me feeling fear and I even screamed once. Not common for a horror fan!
