Magnolia
I really am just lost for words. The concept of magnolia really fucks with your head. Pta masterfully blends multiple different stories and fits them into an interconnected web through characters crossing paths or even the similarity in which every scene is shot. Magnolia has a profound story to tell about how the past drastically impacts each character that is put forth yet is begging the viewer for forgiveness for the actions of each character, from earl being absent during his wifes death to jimmy gator committing atrocities against his family to donnie trying to get braces to impress someone, each character is at the mercy of the viewer and by far my favorite of these instances is with frank. Tom cruise plays frank in a perfect way and is one of my favorite performances from anyone ever. From when we first meet frank we can see how his character unravels and reveals why he is the way he is with the reason being the repressed emotions and hatred he has towards his father. The moment he freezes in the interview while phil is trying to get him on the phone was so interesting culminating with his heartfelt conversation with his dying father later being one of the most powerful i have ever seen. The use of the number 82 and the monologues to pta showing how he is going to play god in this story in the intro, this film is genuinely surreal and feels like real life. All of these stories intertwined in varying ways yet are woven into this masterpiece with delicate precision.
