Materialists
i don’t know why they hate this movie, but for me it shows realism towards love nowadays. It’s not perfect but it’s good.
This movie is basically a look in the mirror for modern dating anxiety: everything’s a resume and no one reads the fine print. Love feels like a merger and dating like stock trading.
Lucy, as matchmaker and eternal bachelorette, knows all the metrics, but somehow loses track of her own heart. The rich guy isn’t evil; he’s just so polished he makes emotional nuance look messy. The ex isn’t savior, just a reminder that sometimes love and not money makes sense.
It’s not a feel-good rom-com, and it’s not cold satire. It sits in the weird, quiet tension between those things. It whispers: maybe love isn’t about your bank account or your checklist, but don’t expect a movie to make that sound easy.
