Heat
After I was so disappointed by the godfather I am really happy I could enjoy this as much as others did! It really still keeps up, 30 years after release.
Summary:
Its a very long movie but it never gets boring tbh. Not 100% the time captivating, so it had its lows, but those still had a high minimum of tension.
I love how this is at first a heist-like movie, turns into a police investigation, then turns into a deliberate flight/escape plot but also always has this romance or wholesome friendship moments well integrated.
Its just good old action with nice punchlines and good characterbuilding.
Also I think those many side stories really paid off and just worked out for the bigger story line!
What I Liked:
- I liked the social aspect of Neil being the boss of his colleague and caring for them. I would put so much trust into him if I was a criminal in his team!
- I loved seeing a competent cop, a "worthy opponent". Great to actually see police work being done! Also it was very neatly done to see him delegate so much work but then again always being out in the field, in the cross fire himself
- for both main characters Neil and Vincent we could also see the more emotional side with their romances and I think this contrast was important to show and to humanize them more.
-> With Neil we have this emotional distant guy who abandons people left and right but has this sudden huge crush on Eady after they had met just a few weeks ago. But also how he cared for Chris and his other crew.
-> with Vincent we have two scenes where he really cares for other people: when he hugs the mother of the 17yo which wraingo had killed. He is capable of being an empath. Also after he had killed Michael he took good care of this child-hostage
- I liked how they knew LAPD was on them but wanted to finish the job anyway, it further uppens the stakes
- for both Neil and Vincent we could see quite well the impact their work had on their private lives. Very well depicted.
Particular scenes I Liked:
- when neil and Chris were made and he noticed by this noise and he stares into that heat camera. Goosebump. High tense situation
- the scene where Vincent finds Lauren after her suicide attempt. It is not needed for the storyline but it definitely is very moving and came out of the blue.
- when Charlene didn't snitch on chris but signalled him to leave. I don't know what repercussions were there for her and her son but I was glad: Chris was a cool guy mostly
- damn, that Trejo death scene... Trejo didn't have that much screentime before but that was so well acted and visually crazy that I really was sad to see him pass..
- that last scene obviously: such a great climax to all of this: just the two main characters on a mostly dark airport field hiding between those cubes. It's such a great contrast to those shootouts where millions of bullets fly, but here only one is really important. Loved how it was resolved also with the shadow due to the lights going on.
- also they kinda hold hands and Vincent is just there for him in his last breaths: this shows what was clear since the coffee talk that they kinda respect each other and their commitment to their work a lot
What I didn't like:
- how Neil and Vincent actually talked over coffee. It made for a great scene and further cleared their motives and how they would act etc etc but I just don't see how this behavior fits into their characters. It's just dumb for both of them.
- when they actually did the bank heist and the police arrived early: this shootout went for so long, a billion bullets were fired. That was just a material battle, a show off.
- I found it unrealistic for eady to be on board for his flight abroad. Imagine you realize the guy you had a crush on killed several people, would you go with him??
- I hated how Neil actually did care for wraingo and revenge. He told Nate on the phone he didn't and I was so happy about it. This is not bad screenplay writing, I think it's even realistic, but I was mad about it nonetheless
