Rye Lane
A movie that you really have to get into the vibe - I hated the first few minutes of it.
But then it slowly becomes this beautiful story of two very different people experimenting for a day and eventually learning from each other's qualities. Then ends with a beautiful reunion which made me so happy for them!
Manager caught me with 18 bottles of piss locked up> I was trying to kiss you on the cheek and I missed
**What I liked:
**- Dom is great. Actor is doing a splendid job, in love with his smile and other mannerisms e.g. how he puts his hands in his pockets and his stand
- the discrepancy in those two main characters works really well. It seems as shallow as "introvert vs extrovert" but it's more than that.
- Eric. Such a simple character. How is he friends with dom? How is he always so cheerful even when being vocally attacked? How does he get away with fkn his best friend's gf? Idk but I love the energy. He is so dumb but so positive
- Bold music choice but it fits this weird style and here I mean it positively weird
- sometimes those small details and effects that throw you off also can emphasize a point quite well. E.g. when Yas gets all fired up in the restaurant and attacks doms ex, the fire in the background is in tune and goes up with a sound effect. Like it.
- I absolutely love how this movie takes the time to showcase the day to day life in a city. Really nice montages, very diverse
- I love the motive of Yas being so cool and independent and that Fassade slowly crumbling and him getting more and more confident and at the end of day 1 standing up for his most important principle "honesty". Really nice process.
- I also liked how essentially they had two "quests"- one fixing his life, one fixing her.
- I really see myself in dom sometime, especially when he tries to be this social adaptor at that party with the Jamaican gal.
- I liked how unexpected the plot twist came that she was dumped not the other way around. Obviously you could see how she really wasn't exactly how she presented herself and especially how dom saw her when she had that phone call at the club, but that was way more than that. Love it. Also very realistic how she can't think straight and is hurt and proceeds to hurt him
- I found it quite insightful to see how they coped after that day and how he was putting in a lot of effort into changing, being more out there, eating that burrito, moving out of his parents house etc etc and she doesnt do/change that much and she is more affected.
- it's less than 90 mins but since it really just focusses on one night and two people you really get a lot of things on screen. Love it.
What I didn't like:
- as stated: the start. The guy who has his art display is unbearable. Dom crying sounds fkn fake. He is such a pushover and his likeable traits only get shown later on
- is directly has these weird stylistic choices in this scene where they urge him to buy the painting and the camera and other effects get very weird. Takes some used to it.
- even after I opened myself up to some stylistic choices, I was weirded out by how when they were telling a story they were actually in there. I get what they want to achieve but I didn't like it that much tbh
- he nearly always wears headphones around his neck and I think it shows how he always has some device of escapism ready, but I wouldn't think he actually would want to display this so blantly since it separates him visually from others and I had a feeling he wanted to blend in
- I would've wished for doms and yas's talking points to be even more deep. They only talk about their ex relationships and I know that's what effected them the most recently and I know it's only on the surface and it has deeper implications yadda yadda but it could've been way better I think
- Yas's ex and gf arriving early from vacation was way too expected
