I mean, wow just wow, this is just simply fantastic. It ditches the golden hues, storybook exposition and glory-based positivity of Troy for a world of dark, terrifying truths and true emotional depth. There is no rolling hills of Greece, no muscle bound Achilles to save the world. It is a deeply scared man trying his best to lead his men to home but cannot defy hard as he may try, what awaits them. The horror elements, the pig scene in particular made me feel physically sick because despite it being magical it feels so real and grotesque. The atmosphere in this movie is dark and gloomy but as it progresses it lightens not into positivity but a small palpable hope, as reflected by the score. This movie does not shy away from the grit and horror of war, and the effects it has on the real people involved. It does not shy from the fact that these are not great warriors making a conquest home, they are sweaty, dirty, tired, hungry and desperate men who want to go home being led by a man who in his heart is not ready. Damon and Hathaway are the standouts, with an all round great ensemble across the board. Nolan’s crowning achievement. 100/100
